I JUST returned after attending the Mind Body Spirit Festival in Brisbane and I’m amazed by the promotion of mantra at the three-day event. The chanting of powerful sacred hymns by the Brisbane based I Pure Soul group of spiritual seekers calmed and promoted peace in the busy exhibition hall. Many were drawn to the chants led by Sailesh Chand Darshan and eased themselves into spiritual bliss even though they did not know the meaning of the tunes. But everyone felt at ease, comfortable and peaceful from the vibration of the sound.

Often asked, what is the power of mantras? The chanting of a mantra serves as a focal point for energy to establish a link between the individual and the cosmos. A mantra is to be seen in Sanskrit, usually in two lines, composed to invoke divine powers. It uplifts and protects an individual by combining the sounds of words with specific spiritual potentialities. The sound waves released by the repetition of the words unfold these potentialities in the physical body by awakening the power center in the body. All mantras contain power and deep philosophical meaning and singing one repeatedly benefits mental, physical and spiritual health. One of the most ancient and profound Sanskrit mantras, known as the mother of the Closedes la Gayatri Mantra. It enhances the flow of positive energy and wards against negative fields. To harmonize a property, it should be chanted (or played, if it is a recording) at sunrise and sunset. An occupant of a property who observes this ritual will be blessed with health, wealth, happiness, peace and improved family relationships.

The mantra reads like this:
Om bhoor-bhuvah-svah, Tat savitur varenyam, Bhargo devasya dheemahi, Dhiyo yo nah prachodayaat.
It means, “O God! Thou art the giver of life, the remover of pain and sorrows, the provider of happiness; O Creator of the Universe, may we receive thy supreme, sin-destroying light; May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction”. In other words, this Vedic hymn inspires righteous wisdom by asking God to illuminate our intellect and, thus, lead us onto a righteous path. This is the most essential teaching. A person’s problems will be solved if he or she is endowed with the gift of righteous wisdom.

With such wisdom, a person will not become entangled in calamity, nor will they tread the wrong path. Righteous wisdom starts emerging as soon as a methodical recitation of this mantra is performed. the Gayatri Mantra does not belong to any particular sect of worship nor is it restricted to any one community. It is universal for the whole world, and it contains in it the culture not of any particular society but the culture of humanity. If the mantra is repeated thousands of times, it produces a cumulative energy stream. Each mantra creates its specific resonance and evokes an associated cosmic force. Any mantra associated with a specific planet creates vibrations that help attain cosmic balance in the human body and mind.
